Cowboys DT David Irving says he’s quitting football while smoking what appears to be marijuana in Instagram video

The drama surrounding Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving continues as his career appears to be going up in smoke.

During a live stream on his personal Instagram on Thursday night, Irving said he’s finished playing football.

“Basically guys, I quit,” Irving said. “It’s a lot of reasons why I’ve come to this decision.”

Irving was suspended indefinitely by the NFL a week ago for another violation of the league’s policy and program for substances of abuse.

Irving appears to be smoking marijuana during the stream and indicates in one of the videos that he’s smoking plants over taking pills.

“It’s not about smoking weed,” Irving said of his decision to quit football. “It’s much bigger than that.”

During the expletive-filled stream, Irving reiterated his issues with the NFL and its stance against marijuana, how popular athletes in other major sports never get into trouble for smoking, as well as his issues outside of his current suspension that led to his decision to stop playing.

“I appreciate my true fans who appreciated me for who I am, not for the whole football stuff because football does not define me,” he said.

Irving played two games last season, totaling 56 snaps while recording one sack and two quarterback pressures.

Last month, the Cowboys indicated they had no intention of re-signing the defensive tackle this offseason.
