People go to any length to enjoy a profound, peaceful sleep. However, for cannabis lovers, nothing can be better than the substance to induce sound sleep. For ages, it has been used to resolve issues like insomnia and other sleeping anomalies, across the world.
While there is little doubt about the efficacy of cannabis in inducing sleep in the users, questions have been raised over its effects on dreaming. Usually, people dream about a lot of things but consuming cannabis can affect that experience. A lot of cannabis users have said upon regular usage, their dreams take a backseat. If they abstain from consumption, dreams return.
Why And How We Experience Dreams?
Before you begin to use cannabis when going to sleep, it makes sense to understand why and how we see dreams! The sleep-wake cycle is divided into 4 phases. These phases can be repeated several times during a night’s sleep. These are:
- The briefest and lightest phase lasting for only 5% of the sleep cycle.
- The 2nd phase gets your body into a deeper slumber. The heartbeat and temperature changes.
- This is where you get into the deepest phase of sleep. In this phase, Tissue repair and growth takes place.
- REM sleep. This is the stage in which you see dreams. It may take up 2 hours.
Importance Of Dreaming
Scientists have debated the usefulness of dreaming for decades. A portion of sleep experts earlier dismissed the importance of dreaming in sleep. However, Dr. Matthew Walker and similar modern sleep experts feel that dreaming is important for your well being. They think REM sleep removes the pain caused by traumatic or emotional events. They also think that dreaming can enrich the brain. Incidentally, REM sleep is the phase in which the anxiety-triggering molecule, noradrenaline, gets reduced in the human brain.
A study conducted on rodents in 2016 indicated that REM sleep deprivation exceeding 72 hours may affect spatial memory. The impaired state may go on for 3 weeks even after REM sleep is restored. Dreaming is a vital thing for the memory and brain.
